The Long Weekend
Here I am, catching up after a weekend that was busy and productive, though not as much as I would have liked. For instance, I finished one book and am halfway through another one, but I had wanted to get that one completely read. I went through 4 of the 5 boxes I pulled down out of the attic -- I could have done all 5. I watched "The Thin Man" (saved on Tivo) but there are more to go. And so on. Alas. At least I have done some things, I guess. I mean, getting rid of crap is nice. Reading is good. Took a couple of walks today (high blood sugar, and the nice day made me want to go out), keeping my weight at the 180 level (which I like). Polished off some links and bookmarks. Did some cleaning Friday and Saturday (the kitchen floor has yet to meet the Swiffer, though). Hung out with a couple of friends. I mean, it is Memorial Day weekend, so rest and amusement, at least, are part of the order of the day.
I have to admit, one downside of cleaning and going through crap is figuring what exactly to do with stuff. Some can be pitched or recycled or donated, but the rest... beats me. I mean, I sort of want it but not really, and then I have to store, and then the question is where (right back in the attic), and at that point, one is like "no." For all of my talk of "If you can't decide the answer is both," I should be a bit more killer-like when it comes to minimally valuable possessions. On the other hand, I came this close to recycling the brochures from family trips, and then I decided that maybe, just maybe, they were worthy of keeping. Half of me tells me I should move to other things, and half says a return trip to the attic is needed to purge more. Oi.
In other news, I have been quite religious about taking stuff to the compost pile. I cut up a watermelon today, and all of the detritus went in, and yesterday I meet sweet corn, and all of the cornsilk and such went in (as have the cobs after I ate the corn). Ditto for any apple cores and orange and grapefruit peels. Mind you, I have not the green thumb, so it is not like I will use any compost. I guess it is better than putting it in the trash and more aesthetic than tossing it in the front yard, but sometimes I impress myself.
I decided to treat myself and Saturday went to Bob's Hamburg in Akron (on my list). It is far but not that far (only a mile off the highway) and it was quite good -- the outside is a bit off-putting, and the area has a Slavic Village vibe, but the food was delicious... simple stuff but done well. The sort of place Mom would have bitched about until she got there, and then she would have loved it, which is actually a good as recommendation as any.
