O, Canada....

Splendid news from Canada, of a sort. Conservative Stephen Harper won the election, albeit not an outright majority, sending Paul Martin and his corrupt, thieving Liberals (imagine that) flying. Compared to the rest of the news from say, Latin America, this is a good thing. While Harper probably cannot enact the necessary reforms, his ascendancy will improve relations with Washington, increase Canada's military, and help enable our friends to the North to join the war on terror.

Well, the public seems to think Alito should be on the Court; will the Senate Dems do the right thing? One almost hopes they filibuster...

Friday nite I had a glass of pinot noir, something I had never sampled before. Quite frankly, I find wine to be a bitter, foul, foreign, French beverage, something one gives to a dog as punishment. This Pinot Noir stuff, though, well, I only tasted that bitter aftertaste a third of time, and at times, it was almost good. Miles may have been on to something.

I need to get my hands on a nut chopper.

as for canada same for latin america... they could change the name of the grand poo-bah of communist genocidal wombats but it wouldn't change the fact that they are completely economically dependent on the usa. canada not as much but in the case of l.a. they go from leftist to middle way to neoliberal every few years. castro without the ussr turns out be nothing, and chavez is just shooting his mouth off. mexico would be glad to sell us their oil in place of chavez if he 'acts' in any way except touring cuba and africa and spouting bullshit. lula in brazil did what every brazilian radical- well for that matter south american radical- did, he adopted imf policy. hell, the inventor of dependency theory, the succesor in the third world to communist economics, fernando enrique cardozo, was elected some 30 years later and saved the economy on a moderate neoliberal no bs campaign. evo morales in bolivia is great. let the indians party, who cares. there is no harm in coca leaves, it is just once you mix them with nice stuff like ether.. and that is being done in rural brazil, peru, and colombia.
if mexico elects a leftist there is even less chance he will be able to pursue any harmful policy towards the usa seeing as mexico is the most dependent economy in the world on the usa. chances for a l.a. pact are nil, btw. they've tried this all the way back to bolivar and no country has similar interests. i assume u are worried about some strange conspiracy down south matt, i dunno, but as a l.a. studies major i have to tell u that l.a. political movements last maybe 5 years until people get impatient. then they elect someone who promises to do the opposite, thus eternally fucking up the chance to get things done. can i say fuck on your blog? can you explain to me why people are so worried about l.a. these days? the only region right now that i wouldn't mind- and will- go right is eurabia, oops, i meant europe. other than that power to the people.

matt- first of all acknowledge my presence on your blog, already?
second of all, why don't you give us all an update on your political views- at least those of us from the historian. the only thing i can remember is constant kvetching- well that's not the word- about the latin mass. i got your website from joe and yes joe i have some idea of your political values, especially the value of being really pissed off in your senior year column. heh heh.

Two questions...
1. Have you ever had plum wine? (Typically served as a dessert wine at chinese and japanese restaurants)
2. Why are you looking for a nut chopper?

Dear Gabe:

This is a pleasant and completely unexpected surprise. I'll write.

Z to the 2.5:

1) No.
2) I just got an exorcism license, and I am looking to break out from the traditional crucifix and holy water schtick.
